Admiralty Arch

The Admiralty Arch separates the "hustle and bustle" of Trafalgar Square from the peaceful gardens of St James's Park and The Mall leading up to Buckingham Palace. This triple-arched stone entrance was designed by Sir Aston Webb and completed in 1912 as part of a project to rebuild The Mall as a grand processional route in honour of Queen Victoria. The side arches are open to traffic but the centre gate is only opened for royal processions and state visits. The building is still used as offices for the Cabinet Office (The Cabinet Office is a government department responsible for supporting the Prime Minister and co-ordinating the delivery of government objectives via other departments. It currently has just over 1,000 staff, most of whom work in Whitehall)

The Latin inscription along the top reads:

 : ANNO : DECIMO : EDWARDI : SEPTIMI : REGIS :
: VICTORIĘ : REGINĘ : CIVES : GRATISSIMI : MDCCCCX :
(In the tenth year of King Edward VII, to Queen Victoria, from most grateful citizens, 1910)
