There has been a church on this site since the 13th century. The present "royal parish church" was completed by James Gibb in 1726 and is a fusion of classical and baroque styles. The design was much copied in the United States where it became a model for the Colonial style of church-building.

Many famous people were buried here including Nell Gwynne (King Charles II's mistress) and the 18th-century painters William Hogarth and Joshua Reynolds.

It has recently been refurbished. Today it helps many homeless people by providing a lunchtime soup kitchen.

Classical concerts are often held in the church at lunchtime and evenings. There are also frequent jazz concerts in the famous crypt cafe.

The church also houses a religious bookshop as well a the London Brass Rubbing Centre.
