The National Portrait Gallery is too often ignored in favour of the National Gallery next door. This fascinating gallery is excellent for putting faces to names which are familiar from the history books. There are paintings of kings & queens, poets, musicians from the last 500 years of British history. To follow the paintings in chronological order you should start on the top floor and work your way down.

The gallery has a rooftop restaurant and an excellent shop selling books on art and literature and an extensive range of posters, prints and cards. The gallery also houses temporary exhibitions
