Big Ben

 

One of the most iconic images of London is Big Ben, towering over the Houses of Parliament and the River Thames. Contrary to popular belief Big Ben is not the name of the 106m high tower or the world's largest four-faced clock which are respectively named the Clock Tower and the Great Clock of Westminster. Big Ben is in fact the nickname given to the Great Bell hanging inside. The 14-tonne bell was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the First Commissioner of Works responsible for overseeing the later stages of the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament. The Clock Tower was completed in 1858 and Big Ben first chimed in July 1859. However only two months after it officially went into service it developed a crack! It was taken out of service for the next three years to allow repairs to the bell be made. Big Ben has chimed with an odd twang ever since.
